Important note on sequencing
The SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer cert is an 8–16 week commitment on top of SnowPro Core. Attempting the advanced cert without adequate prep wastes $375 and the retake window.
Why this certification
The SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer is the highest-value external credential for the Data Service team. It validates exactly what Brainforge’s data engineers do for clients: designing ingestion pipelines, handling streaming data, building transformation workflows, and managing compute at scale.
Holding this cert strengthens Brainforge’s Snowflake partnership tier and is one of the primary reasons the cert program exists (partnership sends leads → certs are the requirement → this is the advanced signal).
Prerequisites
- SnowPro Core must be active — you cannot register for this exam without it. Complete snowpro-core.md first.
- 2+ years of hands-on production experience as a data engineer (Snowflake recommends this; the Brainforge Data Service team meets it)
- Proficiency in SQL; Python experience is beneficial
Step 1: Download the study guide
Download and review the official DEA-C02 exam guide before touching any courses.
Exam guide and study guide: learn.snowflake.com/en/certifications/snowpro-advanced-dataengineer-C02
FAQs for the updated DEA-C02: learn.snowflake.com/en/pages/snowpro-dataengineer-C02-FAQs
The study guide maps every exam domain to specific Snowflake documentation pages. Use it as your reading list, not just a checklist.
Step 2: Book your exam date
Register at: cp.certmetrics.com/snowflake/en/login
You can only register after your SnowPro Core certificate is active (allow a few business days after passing Core for it to process).
Payment note (TBD): The certification exam is paid and typically requires upfront payment at scheduling/checkout time. Brainforge’s policy on who should pay upfront (and how reimbursement/coverage works) is TBD.
Step 3: Complete the prep courses
Free courses (Snowflake University — self-paced)
| # | Course | Where | Domain covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Data Engineering Workshop (Badge 5) | learn.snowflake.com/en/courses/OD-ESS-DNGW/ | Pipelines, tasks, pipes, MERGE |
| 2 | Level Up: Data Loading | learn.snowflake.com/en/courses/OD-LVLUP-106/ | COPY INTO, Snowpipe, loading options |
| 3 | Level Up: Query History and Caching | learn.snowflake.com/en/courses/OD-LVLUP-201/ | Performance and cost-aware query behavior |
| 4 | Level Up: Resource Monitors | learn.snowflake.com/en/courses/OD-LVLUP-107/ | Cost controls and monitoring |
| 5 | Spark to Snowpark with the SMA | learn.snowflake.com/en/courses/OD-SC-SMA/ | Snowpark + migration patterns (useful for Snowpark portions of the exam) |

Step 4: Study the exam domains
| Domain | What to study |
|---|---|
| Data sourcing and ingestion | External stages (S3, Azure Blob, GCS), COPY INTO, Snowpipe, REST API event-based loading, file format handling, error management on load |
| Data transformation | Multi-step SQL transformations, stored procedures (JS + Python), Snowpark DataFrames, UDFs, external functions |
| Near real-time streams and pipelines | Streams (standard vs append-only vs insert-only), change tracking, tasks and DAGs, event-driven task triggers, Snowpipe Streaming |
| Scalable compute solutions | Virtual warehouse sizing, multi-cluster warehouses, resource monitors, credit usage optimization, compute separation for workloads |
| Performance and data quality | Query profiling (Snowsight explain plan), clustering strategies, materialized views, search optimization, data quality monitoring patterns |
What to go deep on for Data Service
The Data Service team’s client work maps most heavily to data sourcing and near real-time streams. These are the areas where Brainforge engineers design solutions clients can’t do themselves — high-frequency ingestion, CDC pipelines, event-driven tasks. These domains are also the highest-complexity questions on the exam. Start here, not at the end.
Step 5: Practice with interactive questions
The DEA-C02 exam includes drag-and-drop and matching question types that do not appear in Core. Practice these specifically — they require schema-level understanding, not just recall.
- Use the practice exam when available on the Snowflake certification portal
- Build a real pipeline project: ingest from an external stage, transform with a stored procedure, expose via stream + task — then explain every step out loud
Step 6: Sit the exam
Exam day checklist:
- SnowPro Core cert is active in your Certmetrics profile — verify before exam day
- Government-issued photo ID ready
- Quiet, uninterrupted space (online proctored via OnVUE)
- System check completed 24 hours in advance
- 115 minutes, 65 questions — more time per question than Core; use it to think through scenario-based questions carefully
- Flag and return on questions you are unsure about; do not leave blanks

After passing
- Share your result in
#ai-learning— log against the Data Service Snowflake milestone. - Your digital badge will arrive via email within a few business days.
- SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer is the top of the Data Service Snowflake path.
Recertification (2028)
This cert expires two years after the exam date. Renewal cost is $188 USD via a recertification exam, or by earning another advanced certification. Set a calendar reminder for 18 months out to avoid lapsed credentials.
