Why

  • Best for immediate productivity: Cursor can read the latest Notion content on demand with existing Notion permissions, without you building and maintaining an export pipeline.

Why not

  • It does not create a durable, reviewable GitHub archive by itself, and it can become token-expensive if you routinely pull full pages or many pages into context.

Token cost estimate (rule of thumb)

  • If you pull Markdown-like text: ~1–2 tokens per word (varies by formatting), so a 1,000-word page is often ~1,200–2,000 tokens.
  • If you pull verbose block structures/metadata (common when retrieving raw blocks): token usage can be 2–5× higher for the same content.
  • Operational takeaway: MCP is cost-efficient when you search first and fetch only the minimum sections; it’s cost-inefficient when you “grab everything just in case.”

Why

  • Best for centralization: you get a stable Markdown corpus in GitHub with diffs, history, PR review, and deterministic context for Cursor.

Why not

  • You own the edge cases: Notion blocks don’t map perfectly to Markdown (tables, toggles, embeds, databases, callouts), plus operational overhead (rate limits, failures, noisy commits, permissions/secret leakage risk).

Why

  • Useful for project tracking: it helps surface GitHub activity (PRs/issues) inside Notion where non-technical stakeholders already work.

  • It is not a viable alternative to “Notion docs → GitHub mirror”; it’s primarily about connecting GitHub work items into Notion workflows, not exporting Notion pages into repos.

What it looks like

  • Use the cron method to mirror a curated set of Notion docs into GitHub as Markdown (playbooks, SOPs, templates, decision logs, meeting outputs you want to keep).
  • Use Notion MCP for ad hoc retrieval when something hasn’t been mirrored yet or when you need the absolute latest draft.
  • Establish a simple rule: if it should be “referenceable and reusable,” it must end up in GitHub; if it’s “drafty/working,” it can stay Notion-first until promoted.

Limitations

  • You still maintain a sync pipeline (cron method), but you can constrain scope to “Sync=Yes” docs and avoid trying to perfectly mirror everything.

If you only use Notion MCP

What it looks like

  • Cursor reads Notion directly whenever it needs context; your documentation workflows remain Notion-centered.

Limitations

  • No GitHub-based source-of-truth corpus or diff history for docs unless you manually export.
  • Token usage can spike if users (or agents) pull too much context, and results can be inconsistent if retrieval isn’t tightly constrained.

If you only use the cron method

Limitations

  • You will spend time on conversion fidelity and long-tail Notion features.
  • Sync latency (even if frequent) means GitHub may lag behind the latest Notion edits, and you’ll need policies for conflicts and review noise.

Practical decision rule

  • If the priority is fast enablement for Cursor: start with Notion MCP, but don’t stop there.
  • If the priority is centralized, governed documentation: implement the cron method for a curated set of docs.
  • For your stated goals (Cursor context + centralized database): hybrid is the highest-leverage and least fragile long-term.
